Brisbane’s River Life

“Rolling…Rolling on the River….” That’s the feeling you’ve got while walking around Brisbane! The Brisbane River is everywhere!

Since I first got here in Brisbane (QLD) I thought how amazing public spaces this city has along the Brisbane River. And all very well maintained by the local City Council, and also by the local community off course. I’ve been photographing those areas since arrival and I never get tired of admiring it.

Many of Brisbane’s suburbs has got a River Front area with plenty of room for pedestrians and cyclists to move freely around. People in this city has definitely no excuses to refuse to do physical activities outdoors because the environment is not only propitious, it is simply perfect! Especially considering the high level of personal security which is found pretty much all over Australia. Houses and buildings facing the river are also extremely common and amazingly pleasant.

Besides running, cycling, walking or practicing any physical activities there are many other options for entertainment at or by the river such as kayak, rock climbing, Stand Up Paddling (SUP) and also nice areas for functions, like wedding parties, birthday parties, and all sort of celebrations. By the way, never try to swim in the river simply because it is infested with bull sharks, as much crazy as it sounds for us Brazilians!

During New Years, people (locals and visitors) take over the grassy areas to watch the traditional Fire Works or to enjoy the free concerts promoted by the City Council during Christmas time. Those areas actually get very busy during those times!

However, once nothing in life is perfect, the strict control over alcohol consumption in Australia doesn’t allow you to freely consume those drinks in those public areas, thing that in Brazil would be completely normal. Careful! You could even get a fine by not following the law, there is always surveillance around.

Off Course, there are always the bars by the river especially around Eagle Street Pier Area and at the brand new Howard Smith Wharf, close to the city. However, don’t plan to stay there until late ’cause they usually close by midnight.

Whenever you are in Brisbane just go around and take at least a breath by the river, it is always a refreshing and very pleasant experience. The nicest areas are undoubtedly South Bank, Kangaroo Point, New Farm, Eagle Street Pier, Teneriffe and Newstead. Enjoy it!
