A Living Vertical Garden

One of the most striking features of One Central Park is its awe-inspiring vertical gardens that cascade down the facades of the buildings. Designed by renowned French botanist Patrick Blanc, these vibrant green walls cover a total area of 1,100 square meters and are home to over 35,000 plants from more than 383 different species. These lush greenery not only adds a touch of natural beauty to the urban environment but also helps to improve air quality by filtering pollutants and producing oxygen.

Sustainable Design

One Central Park is an interesting example of sustainable architecture. The project’s designers, Jean Nouvel and Patrick Blanc, have incorporated a range of environmentally friendly features into the development. The towers are equipped with state-of-the-art solar panels that harness the abundant Australian sunshine, generating clean energy to power the buildings and reduce their carbon footprint.

Designed to overcome seasonal conditions, plants which thrive with large exposure to sunlight were selected for the top of the wall, such as Acacias (wattles) and poa (grasses) while more delicate plants such as goodenia (hop bush) and viola (native violet), were chosen for the lower areas. Arup consultants provided annual and seasonal assessments of daylight availability to determine the best locations for these gardens.

In addition to the solar panels, the towers also utilize a tri-generation system that produces electricity, heating, and cooling by utilizing natural gas. This system significantly reduces energy consumption and greenhouse gas emissions. Furthermore, rainwater harvesting systems are in place to collect and reuse rainwater for irrigation purposes, minimizing the strain on local water resources. The building reached the 5 Star Green Star ratings for its retail and residential sections.

A Community Hub

One Central Park is not just about architectural excellence; it also serves as a vibrant community hub that fosters social interaction and a sense of belonging. The development features a wide array of amenities, including retail spaces, restaurants, cafes, and recreational areas. These spaces provide residents and visitors with opportunities to connect, relax, and enjoy the vibrant atmosphere.

The project also boasts a remarkable public park known as Chippendale Green. Stretching over 6,400 square meters, this lush parkland serves as a green oasis amidst the concrete jungle. It features landscaped gardens, ponds, and seating areas, offering a serene retreat for the community. Additionally, regular cultural events, art installations, and performances are hosted in the park, further enhancing its vibrancy and appeal.

Beyond its physical features, One Central Park has played a significant role in revitalizing the surrounding area. By creating a harmonious blend of residential, commercial, and recreational spaces, the development has contributed to the transformation of the Chippendale neighborhood into a thriving and desirable place to live, work, and play.

Questions

As an Architect, designer, I would be very interested in knowing what is the amount of work and how much it would cost to perform maintenance in a building like that. It would definitely take a huge logistics project to solve maintenance in a building of this type. I wonder if it is still worth financially for the building to run it considering all the greenery involved.

Conclusion

One Central Park stands as a testament to the power of innovative design, sustainability, and the harmonious coexistence of nature and urban living. Its vertical gardens, sustainable features, and community-centric approach have elevated the standard for architectural projects worldwide. By creating a green oasis in the heart of Sydney, One Central Park has not only transformed the skyline but also enriched the lives of those who reside, work, and visit this remarkable development. As we continue to face environmental challenges, this iconic project serves as a reminder of the possibilities and the positive impact that architecture can have on our cities and our planet.
